It's a homecoming for both players! Genève-Servette and HC Lugano reached an agreement for the exchange of two players this Monday. Matthew Verboon, a 25-year-old forward trained at GSHC, is returning to his hometown by signing a three-year contract with the Aigles. Alessio Bertaggia, meanwhile, is going the other way and will once again wear the Lugano jersey.
The Ticino forward played 162 games with the Grenat, earning a total of 34 points (16 goals and 18 assists), a Swiss championship title, and a European championship title. Genève-Servette thanks Alessio Bertaggia for his unwavering commitment to the project and wishes him all the success he deserves with his new challenge!
Matthew Verboon is a 25-year-old Canadian-Swiss forward who started playing hockey in Trois-Chêne! His potential quickly became evident, and he joined Genève Futur Hockey in 2011. After a remarkable start with the U15s, he made his way to the U17s, where he excelled.
In 2015, he had a season with 41 points in 55 games, which opened the doors to the U16 national team. Two years later, he played a full season with the U20 elite team at the age of 17, finishing second on the team in scoring with 46 points in 53 games. He won the U20 Elite championship with Genève Futur Hockey. That year, he also played in the U18 world championship with Switzerland.
Matthew Verboon moved to North America in 2018, where he played one season with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (BCHL – 57 points in 55 games). He then joined Colgate University and the NCAA for four seasons, establishing himself as one of his team's leaders. During the 2022-2023 season, he won the NCAA playoffs for his conference before being named Student-Athlete of the Year in his league. This award recognizes his work on the ice but also in his studies.
In 2023, Matthew Verboon began his professional career with HC Lugano, where he has played ever since. With the Bianconeri, he scored 13 goals and 9 assists, for a total of 22 points in 119 games. The Geneva native can play on the wing or at center and is a player with a solid physique (185 cm and 89 kg).
